Car Rats

One day in the early months of 2015, things slowly began disappearing from the middle compartment of my mom's Prius. It was things so small that we didn't really notice at first, chap sticks and food wrappers we had simply assumed someone had thrown out, but we were wrong... oh so wrong. Now pest control was not a new thing to our family, in the house I grew up in, we had found several squirrels in the attic and birds in the chimney but they never affected our lives. In the car, however, we began to notice holes in the fabric where we suspected a rodent to be burrowing. My mother bought those sticky traps that makes PETA cringe, and put them in our car. In retrospect I don't understand this because absolutely no one in my family would have had the balls to remove the trap had it caught the rat, so thank Jesus we never had to find that out the hard way. Finally the car was taken in to the mechanic so that the damage the rats caused could be fixed. When they looked under the dash board, they found wrappers and other trash hoarded by the rats. The craziest part was that the rats had actually chewed through the airbag wires so that they wouldn't have gone off in a crash. Naturally this led to several theories of how the rats planned to take over the car had we not discovered their ploy.

The rats were never actually caught because they only lived in our car at night and spent the rest of the day outside. They are still out there, waiting for the day when a teal EOS sits temptingly in the middle console seducing them into once more inhabiting the comfort of our car.

DISCLAIMER: No rats were harmed in the writing of this story.
